Provoking Ghosts

Die Arbeiten der Gruppenausstellung »Provoking Ghosts« verstehen sich als eine Herausforderung an die Geisterwelt. Um diese aus der Reserve zu locken, wird das Übersinnliche banalisiert und das Banale mystifiziert.
Auf diese Dialektik verweist auch Karen Koltranes titelgebender Videofilm. Ihr simples Aufnehmen eines Fernsehers öffnet einen irrealen intermediären Raum, in dem die Provokation als Feedback anhält.
Zwar nicht zu orten, aber dennoch den Arbeiten immanent, sind die Geister nicht transzendent.
Im Gegenteil beweist jede Projektion oder Reflexion, jede Doppelung oder Leerstelle eine Anwesenheit. Irgendwo zwischen dem plakativ-unheimlichen einer Séance und selbstironischer Skepsis lässt sich ein Adressat herauslesen, der nicht körperlich anwesend ist, dessen Echo den Arbeiten jedoch schon eingeschrieben ist.
The artworks of the group show »Provoking Ghosts« attempt to challenge the world of ghosts. The exhibition’s concept is based on Karen Koltrane’s video of the same title, which refers to the dialectics of the supernatural and the trivial. By simply filming a TV set, she opens up an unreal, intermediate space in which the provocation and the feedback become one.
Though they cannot be located, the ghosts are nevertheless intrinsic to the artworks and are thus not transcendent.
On the contrary, every single projection and reflection, every duplication and void proves their presence. Somewhere between the explicit uncanniness of a séance and self-ironic skepticism, a recipient can be perceived that is both physically absent but present in the artworks themselves.
